After visiting the Temple on a general tour, visitors may wish to explore the temple story in detail through a variety of specialty tours. The following interpretive programs are available upon request. Please make your program reservation at least two weeks before your arrival.

From Basement to Bell Tower: Construction and Preservation of the Kirtland Temple

Experience the spaces of the temple not viewed on other tours. Climb through the bell tower to see the 1890 bell, walk through the basement to discover historic tools and a steam tunnel. Visitors will learn more about the structural landmark than ever before. Visitors are required to wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes. No sandals or skirts allowed. Tour limited to five persons, reservations required. Tour fee: $25.00 per person.

Streets of the Saints: An Exploration of Kirtland’s Historic District

Historical interpreters introduce visitors to the breadth and depth of the 19th century LDS community while exploring the historic streets surrounding the temple. Visitors imagine the ideas of the early pioneers in hearing about their carefully created city plans for Kirtland. Tour includes a brief stroll through the Kirtland Mills Burying Ground, Temple gardens, and neighborhood surrounding the temple. Please allow yourself ninety minutes for the tour. Tour limited to ten persons, please dress comfortably. Tour fee: $5.00 per person, reservation required, weather permitting.

In the Shadows of the Temple: Final Resting Place for the Kirtland Saints

A forty minute tour that encompasses the stories of the 19th century Latter Day Saints buried in the cemetery next to the temple. Hear about the tragic death of Joseph Coe, the theatrics of Increase Van Deusen, the will of Charlotte Bond, and the dedication of John Johnson. Please allow yourself sixty minutes for the tour. Tour is limited to fifteen persons, reservations required. Tour fee: $8.00, $4.00 of which is donated to the Kirtland Cemetery Association.
